Difference Between Blue Muang Thai Insurance and Pink Muang Thai Insurance

Confusingly, there are actually two different companies under the name “Muang Thai Insurance.” They have the same logo but with a different color.

Muang Thai Insurance logo
This review article is for Muang Thai Insurance with a blue logo.

Here are some key differences:

  • Blue Muang Thai Insurance focuses mainly on non-life insurance products such as car insurance, health insurance, property insurance, fire insurance, and business insurance.
  • Pink Muang Thai Insurance focuses mainly on life insurance products and health insurance that comes as an add-on to their life insurance plans. However, they now also provide standalone health insurance plans. Their Thai name, Muang Thai Life Insurance, reflects their main product.

In this article, I will review only Blue Muang Thai Insurance.

Fun fact: Madam Pang, a famous female president of the Football Association of Thailand, is also the current CEO of Muang Thai Insurance.

Credibility

Since Muang Thai Insurance has been in the market for almost a century, the company is credible. It’s a legitimate insurance company and should still be in Thailand for many more years to come.

Products

While Muang Thai Insurance offers various insurance products, there are mainly only two that are interesting for expats in Thailand:

  • Car insurance
  • Health insurance

Let’s take a look at each product individually.

Car Insurance

The car insurance market is very big in Thailand. According to the Thai General Insurance Association (TGIA), car insurance occupies 49% of the overall insurance market with a market value of 135,772 million baht.

Muang Thai Insurance is among the top five insurance companies that take 49.5% of the car insurance market share.

This data shows how big Muang Thai Insurance is in Thailand when it comes to car insurance.

Muang Thai Car Insurance Plans

In addition to compulsory motor insurance, which is provided by all car insurance companies in Thailand with the same coverage and at the same price, Muang Thai Insurance offers the following voluntary motor insurance products:

  • All types of insurance from type 1 to type 3 for petrol cars
  • Car insurance for electric vehicles

You have choices of deductibles ranging from 1,000 baht to 5,000 baht.

I made a claim three times with Muang Thai Insurance. One involved a tree suddenly falling next to my car. All the claims were handled well.

Car Insurance Coverage

Since the car insurance market is very competitive, car insurance coverage for each company is similarly the same. The coverage mainly depends on the type of insurance you choose.

When it comes to coverage limits, it’s also similar to most insurance companies on the market.

Car Insurance Premium

When it comes to premiums, Muang Thai Insurance is in the mid-price range.

It’s more expensive than Roojai Insurance and Dhipaya Insurance but not as expensive as Viriyah Insurance and Bangkok Insurance.

The table below gives you a quick comparison of how Muang Thai Insurance compares with other providers in the market.

Claim Procedure

I made a claim three times with Muang Thai Insurance:

  • First accident: Someone hit my car on Ratchada Road at around 10 pm.
  • Second accident: A tree suddenly fell and almost hit my car at 6 am.
  • Third accident: I accidentally hit an iron pole in a department store at around 2 pm.

For the first accident, although it was late at night, their insurance agent came to me within 15 minutes after contacting them. After that, he dealt with the accident professionally and handled my claim form.

For the second accident, the overall experience was the same. The agent came to the scene quickly, even though it was early in the morning, and handled everything professionally.

For the third accident, it was different since the accident occurred because of me without any other party involved. They asked me to add their Line account and send them all the pictures of the accident. Once I did that, they sent me a claim form online, which I could use to have my car fixed later.

Based on my experience, Muang Thai Insurance handled claims professionally, and I’m very happy with their service.

Partnered Garages

Being one of the biggest insurance companies in Thailand, they have partner garages throughout the country.

Partnered garage for Muang Thai Insurance
Muang Thai Insurance have partnered up with many garages throughout Thailand.

However, not every garage accepts claims from Muang Thai Insurance. If you have any garage in mind where you want to have your car fixed, recheck with them in advance to ensure they accept Muang Thai Insurance.

From what I gather, the number of partnered garages isn’t as large as Viriyah Insurance, which most garages accept.

Car Insurance Customer Support

While you can contact their customer support by calling 1484 anytime of the day, English support might not be available all the time, especially late at night or early in the morning.

If that’s the case, they will call you back as soon as possible.

Should I Buy Car Insurance from Muang Thai Insurance?

In my opinion, if the garage you are planning to have your car fixed accepts claims from Muang Thai Insurance, it’s an interesting option.

I always have good experiences with their customer support and claim procedures. The premium is also cheaper than Viriyah Insurance or Bangkok Insurance.

As a matter of fact, I also asked the garage owner who fixed my car about his opinion on Muang Thai Insurance. He said that it was a good company and approved claims quickly.

The only thing I would like to complain about is the number of partnered garages. While they have partnered garages throughout Thailand, not every garage accepts claims from Muang Thai Insurance.

Health Insurance

Muang Thai Insurance has several health insurance plans available.

While their health insurance plans are mainly for Thais, there are some plans that can be interesting to expats in Thailand, offering a maximum coverage of 10 million baht per illness.

Plan and Coverage

There are four main health insurance plans available, with a starting coverage limit per sickness of 1,000,000 baht.

Here’s what you get from their highest health insurance plan, Plan 4:

  • Maximum coverage per sickness: 10 million baht
  • Room and board: 15,000 baht
  • Hospitalization: up to the maximum coverage
  • Hospital fee: up to the maximum coverage
  • Doctor fee: up to the maximum coverage
  • Surgery fee: up to the maximum coverage
  • Day surgery: up to the maximum coverage
  • Personal accident: up to the maximum coverage
  • Cancer coverage: up to 1 million baht
  • Premium for age 41-45: 41,900 baht per year

It’s also possible to include outpatient treatment coverage in your main health insurance plan.

  • 2,000 baht per visit
  • A maximum of 30 visits per year
  • 13,004 baht per year for ages 41-50

Similar to most local insurance providers, you only get coverage within Thailand.

Partnered Hospitals

One of the great things about Muang Thai Insurance is the number of partnered hospitals in Thailand. They are partnered with over 300 hospitals and clinics throughout Thailand.

Here are examples of their partner hospitals in Thailand.

Bangkok:

  • Bumrungrad Hospital
  • Bangkok Hospital
  • Samitivej Hospital (both in Sukhumvit and Srinakarin)
  • BNH Hospital
  • Bangkok Christian Hospital
  • Thai Nakarin Hospital

Chiang Mai:

  • Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai
  • Chiang Mai Medical Center Hospital
  • Chiangmai Ram Hospital

Phuket:

  • Bangkok Hospital Phuket
  • Mission Phuket Hospital

Health Insurance Claim Procedure

To make a claim with Muang Thai Insurance, you can show your Muang Thai Insurance card and visit their partnered hospital.

Muang Thai Insurance will pay directly to the hospital. You are only responsible for the outstanding amount that exceeds your coverage.

Health Insurance Customer Support

Similar to car insurance, you can call their customer support at 1484 anytime of the day.

Should You Buy Health Insurance from Muang Thai Insurance?

While their health insurance plans are affordable, the coverage might not be sufficient.

The deal breaker is cancer coverage. Even with their highest plan, it comes with coverage of only 1 million baht, which is not sufficient.

There’s a good discussion on a Thai cancer Facebook group about the required coverage limit for cancer treatment. Many people shared their experiences there, saying that the average cost of cancer treatment in a private hospital in Thailand for initial cancer stages is 2 million to 3 million baht.

For some people who are in the final stage of cancer treatment and got treatment from a premium hospital, the treatment cost was around 35 million baht.

In my opinion, expats often get a better deal with international health insurance. While the cost is slightly higher, the coverage is much better.

For example, Cigna Global, even with their starting plan, offers a 35 million baht limit, including cancer. It also covers many countries worldwide, including your home country, not just Thailand.

In addition to Cigna Global, another alternative is a local plan from Luma Health. It’s more affordable.

Other Products

In addition to car insurance and health insurance, Muang Thai Insurance offers the following insurance products:

  • Personal accident insurance
  • Travel insurance (mainly for Thais traveling abroad)
  • Fire and property insurance
  • Commercial insurance
  • Pet insurance

As mentioned earlier, they are mainly for Thai citizens. So, I won’t review them in this article.

Now, on to You

While Muang Thai Insurance has many types of insurance in Thailand, in my opinion, only car insurance is interesting.

When it comes to health insurance, there are more interesting options for expats in Thailand.

Still, before buying it, it’s a good idea to compare coverage with other providers yourself. You can use CheckDi to do so.
