A first-hand expat review of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin: what to expect, how the process works, what it costs, and when it’s worth going elsewhere in Hua Hin for cheaper care.

After living in Hua Hin since 2020, I have had the unfortunate need to visit Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin (BHN) for several concerns requiring specialist visits, scans, labs, and a several-night stay.

I have been able to see a gynecologist for an ultrasound, a dermatologist to diagnose a terrible tropical rash, and a gastroenterologist to treat a complex GI condition that required a two-night stay, a CT scan, and many labs.

While my experiences haven’t been perfect and the price is higher than at other hospitals in Hua Hin, I have appreciated the ease of seeing English-speaking specialists, the full diagnostic capabilities and technology available, and the ability to bill my health insurance directly.

Here’s the full breakdown of my experience at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin.

Key Takeaways

  • After five years of visits, from a tropical rash to a two-night hospital stay, Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin remains my default hospital in Hua Hin
  • English-speaking staff at every level made a real difference for me, though a Thai speaker still helps with complex medical conversations
  • Same-day and next-day appointments are usually available online, but expect to wait at least an hour once you arrive, even with a booking
  • If you have international health insurance with direct billing, Bangkok Hospital is hard to beat for convenience and peace of mind
  • Costs run 20% to 70% higher than local public hospitals. I personally paid THB12,000 for an ultrasound that cost only THB4,000 at San Paulo Hospital
  • For complex or emergency care in specialties like cardiology, neurology, or oncology, Bangkok Hospital has expertise and equipment you need
  • For routine scans and tests, it’s worth shopping around, as the savings can be significant if you’re paying out of pocket
  • Because of the price, it’s not always the right choice for everyone

Why Choose Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin?

For me and most expats, the choice comes down to three main factors:

  • The efficiency of being able to visit one integrated location for labs, scans, and results, no matter what condition you come in with.
  • The ability to communicate clearly in English with staff at all levels, from the receptionist to the specialist, in a foreigner-friendly environment.
  • The wide variety of specialty care on offer and the up-to-date technology each specialty is equipped with.

I also have international health insurance, which makes a practical difference: I was able to bill most visits directly, make appointments online (usually the same day), and access everything in one building.

Making an Appointment

I find making an appointment online very convenient and have always booked this way, usually getting the time I requested or my second choice.

The only exception was when I was referred to the hospital by BeWell Medical Center for acute care, in which case I went directly to the hospital’s front desk.

My Experience: When I made an appointment in advance, the doctors were fairly timely. But when I needed to be seen the same day, despite being quite ill, I waited around two hours before being seen beyond an initial vitals check. It’s a busy hospital that sees an impressive number of patients every day. Expect to wait at least an hour, even with an appointment.

Registration

Plan to bring your passport and spend a few minutes registering at the front desk if it’s your first visit. You’ll be issued a digital patient ID and asked about your insurance information.

If you have international insurance, show them your card so they can start the approval process upfront.

Seeing the Doctor

Once you’re registered, the receptionist will send you either directly to a specialist department or to see a general practitioner on the main floor. A nurse will assist you in checking in and will take your vitals before you see the doctor.

If you are seeing a specialist, you will be in a large, private room on the upper hospital floors. If you are meeting a GP on the main floor, you will technically be in a private room, but the door is likely to be left open and you may be interrupted during the visit.

Otherwise, there are few surprises when meeting with a doctor at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin. I saw the doctor, explained my history, was sent to the lab for blood tests and scans, received a diagnosis either that day or at a follow-up appointment, and picked up any prescriptions on the way out.

My Experience with The Medical Staff

My experience with doctors at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin has been mixed. I’ve found it easy to communicate with medical staff throughout the hospital, but haven’t always understood why the doctors were taking the actions they were or whether other options were available. Having a Thai speaker along would likely help when navigating more complex medical terminology.

Doctors have readily responded to both my acute and general medical needs with seemingly appropriate approaches, prescribing medications and other treatments as needed, even when the reasoning wasn’t always fully explained to me.

I’ve also been able to see competent specialists quickly, something that could take months in the US. I was even able to see a dermatologist within a few days (after an initial screening appointment with the GP), who provided a quick cure and thorough follow-up instructions.

After Your Appointment

Once you’ve seen the doctor, they will explain the next steps and either have you schedule a follow-up appointment, send you for tests or labs, or direct you downstairs to the cashier and pharmacy if you have been prescribed medication.

The cashier and pharmacy windows have recently been moved from the lobby area into a new building, “Zone B“. Simply follow the signs past the waiting area and the elevators to find the new windows.

On arrival, look for the “Bee” machine and follow the instructions to take a device. Once your device is called, go to the window and hand the cashier your paperwork for processing.

They accept payment by cash, card, or PromptPay QR code via your mobile banking app. You will receive a receipt once payment goes through, and will either be asked to wait for your medications from the pharmacy or sent on your way.

Pharmacy and Medications

If you have medications to pick up, wait until your number is displayed and go to the window. Pharmacy staff can give instructions in both English and Thai.

Pharmacy prices are in line with others around town; in my experience, you won’t see a significant markup. You’re likely to receive Thai brand medicine, so discuss with your doctor in advance if you’re expecting a specific Western brand.

Making a Follow-Up Appointment

If your doctor instructs you to return for a follow-up, simply visit the department’s reception desk or the main front desk to set a date and time. They will give you a printed slip with your next appointment, and will also send text and email reminders if you’ve opted in to those communications.

You will still need to check in on the main floor when you return. The receptionist will send you up to the specialty department and let them know you’ve arrived.

Getting Tests, Scans, and Labs

Whether you are seeing a general practitioner or a specialist, you may end up needing blood tests, scans, or other labs.

Simply follow the nurse’s instructions to find the appropriate area. You will have a private room and may be asked to change into a gown. Complete the test and carry on with the rest of your doctor’s visit. The hospital staff will handle the paperwork.

You may receive results immediately, or the hospital may contact you by phone or email after the appointment.

My Experience with Getting Tests

Before my hospital admission, I was sent for blood tests. These were performed efficiently by a nurse in a specialized booth, and I received an English printout of my results within 24 hours. The doctor briefly went over the results with me, noting they were largely unremarkable.

I was then sent for a CT scan and asked to sign a waiver acknowledging the THB30,000 cost if my insurance was denied. While my coverage was eventually confirmed before I was discharged, the initial uncertainty was nerve-racking.

The scan showed only a slightly inflamed appendix, and the results were briefly explained by the doctor. I was, thankfully, sent home with a CD of my scans so I could seek a more in-depth second opinion.

I have also been to the gynecologist for an ultrasound at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin. In that visit, the doctor found several masses and offered to operate. I decided to wait several months to monitor the situation and eventually found the same pelvic exam and ultrasound available for a third of the price at San Paulo Hospital.

While Bangkok Hospital offers a high level of convenience and speed, many tests and labs can be found elsewhere at a significantly lower price. If you have the luxury of time, it is well worth shopping around.

Getting Admitted to the Hospital

If you need to be admitted, your intake doctor will inform you and ask you to select a room and sign intake documents.

Below is a room rate based on the Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin website:

  • Executive Suite: THB11,070
  • Deluxe: THB8,470
  • Standard: THB6,970
  • ICU Rooms: THB11,050
  • Labor and Delivery Rooms: THB3,230
  • Specialty Negative Pressure Rooms: THB13,070

I opted for the Standard room and found it very spacious for myself and my husband when he visited. There was a large bathroom and shower, a full kitchenette with a fridge, a small couch and chair, a TV, and a comfortable, well-equipped medical bed. The room was private, clean, and quiet, with responsive nursing staff who checked in every few hours.

I was admitted for a gastrointestinal issue, so I required a bland diet during my stay, and the meals certainly delivered on that front. I remember mostly mashed potatoes and rice, but meals arrived on time and were well-presented.

Tip: Costs beyond the published room rates aren’t particularly transparent. So, the final price you pay, after including medications, doctor’s fees, and much more, is going to be more expensive than the published room rates. Also, make sure the hospital staff clearly explains which room type they recommend before you are admitted.

Hospital Costs

The price of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is on the more expensive side compared to other hospitals here. However, the overall prices are lower than what you’d pay in Western countries, and anywhere from about 20% to 70% higher than local public hospitals.

Here are a few costs I’ve incurred over the years at BHN. All prices are in Thai baht.

TreatmentCosts
General Doctor’s VisitTHB500 to THB1,500
Specialist VisitTHB1,000 to THB2,500
LaparoscopyTHB250,000
Colonoscopy & GastroscopyTHB32,000
CT ScanTHB30,000
Gynecologist Visit with UltrasoundTHB12,000

If you are paying out of pocket, ask for a breakdown of costs before agreeing to care. For scans and tests, you can often get the same service at a nearby hospital for a fraction of the cost. An ultrasound and doctor visit cost me THB12,000 at Bangkok Hospital and only THB4,000 at San Paulo Hospital for the same service.

How Was the Overall Experience at Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin?

While it is not the cheapest option available, I keep coming back to Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin. This is partly because my health insurance has a direct billing relationship with the hospital, so I know upfront what my coverage will cover before agreeing to care.

I’ve also appreciated the level of care from the medical staff. I found them professional and knowledgeable, and treatment was on par with or better than what I would have received in the United States.

Do I Recommend Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin?

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is the gold standard for private care in Hua Hin, but it’s hard to justify the cost if you’re paying out of pocket.

There are exceptions: for emergency and complex care in specialty departments like neurology, cardiology, or oncology, BHN has exclusive experts and equipment you won’t find elsewhere in town.

But if you’re living in Hua Hin and have expat health insurance, Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is likely going to be your default hospital, just as it is mine.

If you don’t have insurance or need to pay out of pocket, I’d recommend shopping around first to see if you can get the same care for less elsewhere.

Two other popular hospitals in Hua Hin for expats are San Paulo Hospital (private) and Hua Hin Hospital (public). The facilities and convenience may not match Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, but both are generally cheaper.
