I’ve been living in Thailand for many years. When I first moved here, I thought health insurance was unnecessary given how affordable healthcare in the country is. My plan was to pay for everything out of pocket.

After talking to many people, I changed my mind. Several told me about their experiences getting hospitalized at leading private hospitals in Bangkok like Bumrungrad and Samitivej. Bills came to THB 100,000 or more. Sometimes, it’s over THB 300,000. And their insurance covered everything in full.

They all said the same thing: they went straight to the best hospital as soon as symptoms appeared, without worrying about cost, because they knew their insurance would cover it.

That convinced me. So I began looking for good health insurance, and that’s how I found Carsten Creutzburg.

Why I Decided to Use a Broker

I did my own research on health insurance in Thailand first and decided that international insurance suited me better than a local plan. But I couldn’t choose between the many options available. Each had so many details to consider.

If you’re at the same stage, the ExpatDen guide on what to consider when buying insurance is a good starting point. It helped me narrow things down before I decided to take a shortcut and work with a broker. I also knew that buying through a broker would cost the same as going directly to an insurer.

How I Found Carsten Creutzburg

Finding an insurance broker in Thailand is easy. In fact, it can be even too easy. When I asked for recommendations in a Facebook group, I was overwhelmed by responses and had no idea who to trust.

Then I remembered a health insurance article on ExpatDen, which had been my main reference throughout my research. That’s where I found Carsten Creutzburg. Since ExpatDen is a source I trust, I figured their recommended broker was worth contacting.

I filled out the form (it’s quite long) and reached out to Carsten straight away.

My Experience Working with Carsten

Carsten replied by email within a day, asking for more details about my situation. Three days after I responded, he sent back a very long email. It felt like an essay. It included a detailed comparison of multiple insurance providers, with costs and benefits laid out clearly. That comparison was genuinely useful for narrowing down my choices.

After many back-and-forth emails, here’s what I took away:

Good things

  • Carsten is very knowledgeable. He told me things about health insurance I hadn’t considered.
  • He’s thorough. Every question I asked got a detailed, clear answer.
  • He came across as recommending what was best for me rather than what paid him the highest commission.

Bad things

  • His emails were sometimes too long.
  • I occasionally had to follow up to keep things moving.

After about a month of emails, I settled on a plan. Carsten handled everything quickly after that, and I’m now insured.

Carsten vs. Other Insurance Brokers

Before contacting Carsten, I’d reached out to a few brokers from that Facebook group. I wasn’t impressed. They typically recommended one or two policies with little explanation, and follow-up emails didn’t help much.

Carsten was different. He explains things in detail, sometimes more detail than you need, given how long his emails run. You can get a sense of his style from his explanation of pre-existing conditions.

Should You Use Carsten Creutzburg?

If you’re looking for international health insurance, I’d recommend contacting Carsten. He seems able to help expats find suitable coverage regardless of where they’re based.

There were occasional delays in communication, but my overall experience was positive.

If you need help with insurance, use this form to get in touch with him. It’s free, and if his service doesn’t suit you, you can simply move on. Nothing to lose.
