Si Sawat: What’s going on? Wi-chian maat! Kao Taem! Where are you running off to, huh?
เก้าแต้ม: เฮ้อ! หนีเถอะ ตัวอะไรก็ไม่รู้ บินวนไปมา
Kao Taem: Hey! Let’s get away from here. There’s something, I don’t know what it is, flying all around above.
วิเชียรมาศ: ตัวอะไรน่ะ สีสวาด
Wi-chian maat: What is THAT, Si Sawat?!
สีสวาด: ตัวต่อไง
Si Sawat: That’s actually a ‘dtua dtor’.
วิเชียรมาศ: ตัวต่อ ตัวต่อนี้ต่อยมั้ย(ไหม)

สีสวาด: แน่นอน ต่อเป็นแมลงชนิดหนึ่ง มีเหล็กใน คนที่โดนต่อยจะเจ็บปวดมาก แล้วถ้าโดนมาก ๆ เนี่ย(นี่) ตายเลยนะ มันมักจะอยู่บนต้นไม้ จำไว้นะ เก้าแต้ม วิเชียรมาศ ถ้าเห็นแล้วก็อย่าเข้าใกล้เชียว
Si Sawat: Of course it does. A ‘dtor’ is a type of insect, it has a stinger and a person who gets stung will feel a really sharp pain. If stung many, many times, death will ensue. It usually lives in trees. Remember this, Kao Taem, Wi-chian maat. If you see one, don’t go near it! I mean it!

Si Sawat: There sure are! ‘Dtor’ has a lot of other meanings.

Narrator: A ‘dtor’ is a venomous insect. There are many species with various different names for example ‘dtor luang’ and ‘dtor hua seua’.

‘Dtor’ (ต่อ) as a noun can mean ‘hornet’ or ‘wasp’. Wasps and hornets often look a lot alike. This is because they are technically the same type of insect. Hornets are a larger variety of wasp, which is where the separation between the two types of insects seems to take place. (Source: Yellow Jacket Wasp Hornet). In Thai, it appears that ‘dtor’ (ต่อ) and ‘dtaen’ (แตน) can be used to make such a distinction between ‘hornet’ and ‘wasp’.
‘Dtor’ (ต่อ) as a verb can mean ‘build (put together)’ / renew or extend / lure / transfer or change / teach; as an adverb it can mean ‘next’; and as a preposition it can mean ‘to’ / ‘with (in relation to)’ / ‘against’.
A ‘dtor luang’ (ต่อหลวง) is a Yellow Banded Wasp (Vespa Cincta).
A ‘dtor hua seua’ (ต่อหัวเสือ) is a Paper Wasp (Vespa Sp.) (Source: Vespa).
