Basic Thai Vocabularies: How to Call Day, Month and Year in Thai

Day

*The names of the days in Thai come from the names of planet

• Moon – ดวงจันทร์ (duang jan)
• Mars – ดาวอังคาร (daao ang khaan)
• Mercury – ดาวพุธ (daao phud)
• Jupiter – ดาวพฤหัส (daao pha ru had)
• Venus- ดาวศุกร์ (daao suk)
• Saturn – ดาวเสาร์ (daao sao)
• Sun – ดวงอาทิตย์ (duang aa thid)

Month

• January, is commonly called “เดือนมกรา” (duan mok ka ra) in Thai
• February, is commonly called “เดือนกุมภา” (duan kum pha) in Thai
• March, is commonly called “เดือนมีนา” (duan mii naa) in Thai
• April, is commonly called “เดือนเมษา” (duan may saa) in Thai
• May, is commonly called “เดือนพฤษภา” (duan prud sa phaa) in Thai
• June, is commonly called “เดือนมิถุนา” (duan mii thu naa) in Thai
• July, is commonly called “เดือนกรกฎา” (duan ka ra ka daa) in Thai
• August, is commonly called “เดือนสิงหา” (duan sing haa) in Thai
• September, is commonly called “เดือนกันยา” (duan kan yaa) in Thai
• October, is commonly called “เดือนตุลา” (duan tu laa) in Thai
• November, is commonly called “เดือนพฤศจิ” (duan prud sa ji) in Thai
• December, is commonly called “เดือนธันวา” (duan than waa) in Thai

Year

Buddhist era, B.E. พ.ศ.: พุทธศักราช /pút-tá~sàk-gà~ràat/
Christian era, C.E. ค.ศ.: คริสตศักราช /krít-dtà~sàk-gà~ràat/

The way to calculate B.E. and C.E. is to add 543 to the C.E. year to give you the B.E. year and vice versa.

Example: 2011 C.E. + 543 = 2554 B.E.

Here’s how to read Thai year:

• ปี 2566 (bpee song phan haa rooi hok sib hok)
• ปี 2567 (bpee song phan haa rooi hok sib jed)
• ปี 2568 (bpee song phan haa rooi hok sib paed)
• ปี 2569 (bpee song phan haa rooi hok sib kaao)
• ปี 2570 (bpee song phan haa rooi jed sib)

Putting it together, a typical date reading in Thai would be in the format:

1. วันที่ (wan thii) + [date] + เดือน (duan) + [month] + ปี (pii) + [year]
2. วัน (wan) + [day] + วันที่ (wan thii) + [date] + เดือน (duan) + [month] + ปี (pii) + [year]

Example 1:

20 December 2023 – วันที่ 20 ธันวาคม 2566

(wan thii yii sib duan than waa khom pii song phan haa rooi hok sib hok)
