Si Sawat: As luck would have it, someone, I don’t know who, dropped this boiled shrimp at the entrance to the market. I spotted it and so I quickly grabbed it and carried it in my mouth here for you.

Wi-chian maat: Thanks, but there’s a ‘Gee’ on its head. I’m so afraid of it puncturing something.

Narrator: ‘Gree’ is written ‘Gor gai, ror reua, sara ee’ and pronounced ‘Gree’, i.e. with a ‘Gor – ror’ consonant blend sound. It’s the word to call the part that is sharp and hard and used as a weapon, at the top of a shrimp’s head.

‘Gree’ (กรี) basically means ‘rostrum’ (from the Latin rōstrum meaning beak). It is the rigid forward extension of the shrimp’s shell that protects its head and thorax. It can be used for attack or defence. It may also stabilize the shrimp when it swims backwards. (Adapted from: wiki: shrimp)
