Si Sawat: What is that sound? I can’t make it out.
แมวสีน้ำตาล: เสียงตุ๊กแกจ้ะ ตุ๊กแกเนี่ยขี้โอ่จังนะ ใคร ๆ ก็รู้ว่ามันชื่อตุ๊กแก ร้องบอกชื่อตัวเองอยู่ได้
Brown Cat: Well, it’s the sound of a gecko. Geckos are real show-offs, you know? Anyone would know that they’re called ‘dtuk gae’ as they basically cry out their own name!

Si Sawat: It’s just making its natural sound. Actually, people call them ‘dtuk gae’ because the sound that it makes sounds like that to them.

Narrator: The important distinguishing features of gecko’s feet are the ability to adhere tightly to and being very difficult to be detached from surfaces. This is the reason why we use ‘gecko’s feet’ as the name of climber vines that climb and adhere themselves tightly to walls.

‘Ton dteen dtuk gae’ (ต้นตีนตุ๊กแก) is the name of a type of plant. It is a climber or vine called coatbuttons or Mexican daisy. Its scientific name is Tridax Procumbens.
In Thai, it’s common for a kinship term such as ‘pee’ (พี่) (meaning ‘elder sibling’) to be used as an honorific before the name of a person older than we are or who is more senior. We use it to show respect so the term may be used in respect of both men and women. They need not be related to us, in fact they may even be total strangers. It is also not necessary for them to actually be older than us. The term may also be used as a personal pronoun.
In Thai, people are usually called by their nicknames only. ‘Ton’ (ต้น) is a common nickname for males. So in this dialogue, ‘P’ Ton’ is abbreviated from ‘Pee Ton’ (พี่ต้น) (literally ‘brother Ton’).
