Si Sawat: I don’t know whether or not it is related to any Chao Phraya. I only know that the river flows out to the sea at the place that was named Tambol Chao Phraya. So they decided to name the entire river the Chao Phraya River.

‘Chao Phraya’ is a Thai title of peerage of civil and military, given only to males and is not inheritable. It was conferred to most senior commissioned officer by Royal Letter of Appointment. Holders of this title are informally addressed and referred to as ‘Chao Khun’ (เจ้าคุณ). (Source: Wiki: Chao_Phraya)

In the media, the ‘Chao Phraya River’ is usually translated as the ‘River of Kings’.

‘Tambol’ means ‘Sub District’.
