Brown Cat: Kao Taem, don’t nap just now! Let’s talk a bit. The other day when we talked about the ‘Crocodile’, there was a line from the ‘sak-ga-waa’ (สักวา) verse that goes ‘see-sa dtok han hang keun glaang haao’. I would like to know whether or not the ‘Crocodile Star’ ‘haao’-ed the way that Kao Taem did?

Si Sawat: Heu heu heu. Nope. ‘Haao’ here means ‘out in the open’ or ‘the sky’. As for the ‘haao’ in respect of Kao Taem, that means ‘yawning from sleepiness’.

The Royal Society Dictionary (‘RSD’) provides two shades of meaning in its entry on หาว. Its first shade of meaning is: a noun meaning ‘out in the open’ or ‘the sky’. The specimen phrase given by the RSD is ‘กลางหาว’. In fact this is the phrase found in the ‘sak-ga-waa daao jor-ra-kay’ (สักวาดาวจระเข้) verse that appeared in Episode Seven. If we were to encounter this phrase at all, it would be in Thai poetry.

The second shade of meaning of หาว is ‘(to) yawn’.
