In Episode 115, we’ve looked at the word ‘Ka-nom’ (ขนม) (meaning ‘dessert’). ‘Jeen’ (จีน) basically means ‘Chinese’. So ‘Ka-nom jeen’ (ขนมจีน) literally translates to ‘(a) Chinese dessert’, which does not make sense to Geng because to Geng, it is: a savory dish, not a dessert; and (2) a Thai dish, not Chinese. Please see Thai Vermicelli for a possible explanation of how the name ‘Ka-nom jeen’ (ขนมจีน) came about.

‘Ka-nom jeen nam yaa’ (ขนมจีนน้ำยา) is basically a Thai savory dish comprising Thai rice noodles served with a curry sauce (usually made with minced fish, fish ball or meat) and lots of fresh herbs and vegetables for example lemon basil, sweet basil, bean sprouts, cabbage and long beans.
