Kao Taem: I’m watching Pee Geng change the fluorescent light tube. The old one is broken.

Wi-chian maat: I see. The light went out because the fluorescent tube is broken, right? I thought that the ‘gaan fai-faa faai pa-lit’ cut the power.

Kao Taem: The ‘gaan fai-faa faai pit’ is obliged to produce power for people to use. So how could it cut the power?!

Si Sawat: The ‘gaan fai-faa faai pa-lit’: you must pronounce it (‘pa-lit’) correctly, Kao Taem. OK?! If you say that it (the electricity authority) is the ‘faai pit’, it may take you to court for defamation, you know?!

Narrator: The word ‘pa-lit’ is pronounced with two syllables, that is ‘pa’ and ‘lit’. It means to bring something into existence, for example ‘pa-lit’ food, ‘pa-lit’ cars, ‘pa-lit’ scholars, ‘pa-lit’ teachers.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) (การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย) is Thailand’s leading state-owned power utility under the Ministry of Energy, responsible for electric power generation and transmission for the whole country. Most of EGAT’s electricity is sold to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) (การไฟฟ้านครหลวง), which supplies the Bangkok region, and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) (การไฟฟ้าส่วนภูมิภาค), which supplies the rest of Thailand.
‘Faai’ (ฝ่าย) has a number of different meanings, including ‘division / department’ and ‘party / side’. ‘Pa-lit’ (ผลิต) means ‘(to) produce’ whereas ‘pit’ (ผิด) means ‘at fault / wrong’. In the dialog above, Kao Taem misunderstood ‘the production division of the electricity authority’ (การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิต) to mean ‘the electricity authority is the party at fault’ (การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผิต).
‘Doo took’ (ดูถูก) literally means ‘(to) look down on / insult’. ‘Min bpra-maat’ (หมิ่นประมาท) means ‘(to) defame’.
