If you are dating in Vietnam, start by deciding who you want to meet and what kind of relationship you are looking for. Then choose an app or website that fits your plans.
If you already live here, try a local search on Tinder alongside activities you enjoy. If you are preparing to move and want a website focused on Vietnamese singles, VietnameseLove and VietnamCupid offer different ways to start conversations. Check who you can actually contact before paying.
This guide covers those options, what you get free, and how to move from an online introduction to a comfortable first meeting. It is written for adults looking for consensual relationships. There is no subscription that guarantees a reply, a date or a compatible partner.
This guide is based on each service’s published help pages and terms, and on official safety guidance, checked in October 2026. We have not tested these services ourselves.
Choosing where to start
| Your situation | An option to try | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| You live in Vietnam and want to meet people nearby | Tinder | Set a practical distance and explain what you want in your profile |
| You are a man looking for a Vietnam-focused website without paying to read messages | VietnameseLove | Search your intended city and see whether conversations develop on the free account |
| You want another Vietnam-focused site to compare | VietnamCupid | Check which features the free membership includes before buying a subscription |
| You prefer getting to know people gradually | Recurring hobbies and social activities | Choose something you would enjoy even without meeting a date |
These are starting points, rather than a ranking of who has the most genuine users. The useful test is whether there are people you want to meet within a distance you can realistically travel.
Dating apps and websites
Tinder
Tinder uses your location and preferences to show potential matches. Creating a profile, liking people and matching are free. It is a reasonable first app to try once you are in the city where you plan to date.
If you are still abroad, its paid Passport feature lets you choose a city before arriving. Passport is available separately or through Tinder Plus, Gold and Platinum. Be clear in your profile about when you will arrive; a virtual location should not leave someone thinking you are already nearby. Conversations with people you cannot yet meet carry more scam risk; read the scams section below before you start.
Start with a small enough search radius that meeting is practical. If the results are thin, widen it gradually rather than building a conversation with someone you have no realistic plan to visit. A paid visibility feature cannot solve a distance problem.

VietnameseLove
VietnameseLove presents itself as a site for international men to meet Vietnamese women. If you are not a man looking for a woman, a broader app such as Tinder will suit you better.
Its FAQ says you can send, receive and read messages free, with a waiting period between sends. Premium is optional. Try the free account first: search the city where you live or intend to stay and see whether you find people you want to talk to.
Consider paying only after the site has proved useful and a specific premium feature would help. Check the total charge, renewal and cancellation terms at checkout. The FAQ notes that deleting your account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription; cancel it in the store first.

VietnamCupid
VietnamCupid is a separate service run by Cupid Media, an Australian company. You can join free, but its terms say free membership covers only some features; the rest need a paid Gold, Platinum or Diamond subscription. Before subscribing, check the profiles in your preferred area and which features your free account actually includes.
Two terms are worth knowing before you pay. Subscriptions renew automatically unless you opt out. When a subscription expires, access to premium features is suspended, and the terms say this includes messages you received while subscribed.
There is little reason to commit to a long plan before you know whether the service suits you.

What should you pay for
You do not need to buy several subscriptions to get started. Choose one service, complete your profile and use what is available free before deciding whether to spend money.
A useful paid feature removes a problem you have already encountered. That might mean searching a destination before your move, or a feature you have checked on the service’s current upgrade page that helps with an active conversation. Paying because you hope it will make strangers interested is a much less reliable reason.
Before confirming a purchase, check:
- The full amount charged now, rather than only the monthly equivalent. A low monthly figure can require a longer purchase than you intended.
- Whether it renews automatically and how to stop the next charge.
- Which features apply on the website and which apply in the app.
- Whether a trial becomes a paid subscription.
Keep the receipt and set a reminder before renewal. Check the account or store where you purchased; removing the app from your phone is not a cancellation method.
Writing a useful profile
Say where you live, how long you expect to stay and what you are looking for. Someone planning a weekend visit and someone settling in for a year have different things to offer. Be honest about which situation is yours.
Use recent photographs where your face is easy to see. Add details someone can ask about: an activity you enjoy, a place you would like to explore or a meal you are learning to cook.
For example:
I’m moving to Hanoi in November for work and plan to stay at least a year. I enjoy cycling, cooking and finding good coffee. I’d like to meet someone interested in a relationship, starting with a relaxed conversation.
Only use details that are true for you. Avoid promises about marriage, relocation or financial support as a way of attracting attention.
If you do not share a fluent language, use short messages and ask when something is unclear. Translation tools can help, but important conversations about consent, exclusivity, money and future plans deserve more care than an automatic translation. Our beginner’s guide to Vietnamese can help you start learning.
Meeting people away from apps
If dating apps feel repetitive, build a routine that puts you around people with shared interests. Consider a running group, a class, a board-game evening or an organized walk. Check current local listings and choose activities you would attend for their own sake.
Recurring activities give you time to get to know people without every conversation becoming a decision about a date. Respect the purpose of the group, and accept that most people you meet will remain acquaintances or friends.
A language exchange should work for both people’s language learning. Do not assume that someone offering conversation practice is looking for romance. If there is mutual interest, ask directly and leave room for a comfortable refusal.
Planning a first date
Choose a popular public place where you can talk and leave independently. A short coffee date is a useful starting point: it limits the commitment while giving both people room to decide whether to meet again.
Agree on the venue rather than accepting repeated last-minute changes. Read the menu before ordering, discuss payment without making assumptions and avoid running up a large shared bill with someone you have just met.
Tell a friend your plan and arrange your own transport. Do not make a private apartment, hotel room or isolated location the first meeting. If you are pressed to move to a different venue, a private place or into unexpected spending, leave. The U.S. State Department’s Vietnam guidance recommends a video call beforehand and warns that criminals can use dating apps to target victims. A video call helps you check that someone matches their profile; it does not prove who they are.

Dating expectations and communication
Ask the person you are dating what they want. Nationality does not tell you whether someone wants marriage, casual dating, children or a move abroad. Neither does the app where you met.
Talk about exclusivity rather than assuming it. If a relationship becomes serious, discuss how family involvement, work, religion and future location might affect your plans. Ask open questions and give your own answers as well.
The same applies to money. Agree on what feels comfortable, and keep financial decisions separate from pressure to prove affection. You can care about someone while declining a request.
Respect a refusal, a change of mind or a lack of response. Paying for dinner or a subscription creates no obligation for the other person.
Recognizing scams
The State Department specifically warns about internet romance scams in Vietnam. Be cautious about urgent money requests, investment pitches, threats and persistent excuses for avoiding a meeting or video call. A verification badge does not replace getting to know someone.
Do not send money to an online acquaintance you have never met. Having met someone once or twice does not make a money request or investment offer safe either. Do not provide banking access or receive and forward funds for anyone. Be careful with intimate images and personal information that could be used to threaten you.
If you suspect a scam, stop contact and save the messages, profile details and payment records before reporting the account. Contact your bank or payment provider promptly if you have already transferred money. Report the profile to the app or site, and to your own country’s fraud reporting service. U.S. victims can report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.
