Thai Learning Apps for Your iPhone, iPad and iPod…

Welcome to my addiction – collecting iOS apps (iPhone, iPad and iPod) for learning Thai. Here you’ll discover apps for Thai dictionaries, Thai courses, translators, OCR, studying the Thai alphabet and vocabulary, phrasebooks, pronunciation lessons, quizzes, ebooks and online bookstores, flashcards, games, keyboards, entertainment (TV and radio), newspapers and magazines, telling time, language exchange and more. And because they are so versatile, I even collect iOS apps for the Thai market – Thais learning Thai.

I started collecting iOS apps back in 2009 when I bought my first iPhone 3G. By 2010 there were enough Thai apps for a series that included Thai Language Phrase books, Thai Alphabet and Vocabulary and iPhone apps: English Thai Dictionaries.

Each year the apps update, multiply, or disappear off the market. Back in 2010 there were around 15 Thai phrase books. Three years later, there are over 70. It’s now past time (story of my life) to write a follow up series.

The number of available apps is so GINORMOUS, two weeks ago (give or take) I felt compelled to create an Excel spreadsheet to wrap my head around what’s out there. And just incase I missed any (Thai apps can be difficult to locate) this week I asked fellow iOS addicts Michel and Bernard if they had any more. They did.

If you’d like to help out with reviews but don’t want to break the bank by acquiring everything, like I did, just skim through the list to see which apps are listed as FREE (there are plenty of free apps to choose from).

Oh. And if you come across apps I don’t have, please send them over.

Please note that not all apps will be included in the review. I won’t share any apps that have been discontinued (obviously), Filthy Thai (I don’t go there), ripped apps, and apps for learning Thai in languages other than English. But I will include a few apps for Thais learning English.

So here it is (finally), Thai learning apps for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod.

  1. where you can make your flash cards, the absolute best method for studying them, and tips to avoid common flashcard pitfalls.
flashcards that are so much better than other methods of studying? There are lots of ways to make flash cards.
a group of classmates can work together to create flashcards they can all use. There’s a bit of an art to creating great flash cards.
flashcards work great for memory retention. Soon flashcards became a key part of everyone’s education suddenly Flash card is everything offline started migrating to online.

Such classic flashcards have been known to aid in memory recollection. There is no age limit to use flash cards — they can work as an engaging learning medium across ages 1 to 6
In using flash cards, our brains are kept constantly stimulated to actively recall information. Flash cards facilitate the metacognitive faculties in our brain.
Flash cards should be used to test your knowledge, not just as a way to condense your notes further. people list bullet points on flash cards that they carry around with them to reread.

  2. Greetings!
I just found this blog. Better late than never! I am a Thai learner. I have been studying myself for a year and a half. I can read Thai (thanks to Learn Thai From a White Guy!) and my vocabulary is growing. I was wondering if anyhow has any good application/resources that help with sentence structure/syntax. I trying to build on simple sentences but it gets quite confusing to put it together! Any leads are appreciated!

  3. Would you happen to know of any Lao language apps that you could recommend? My family speaks Lao, but I can’t read or write it. Thai is very similar & I’ve spent quite a while perusing Thai language apps, books, sites, etc. I’m actually somewhat surprised, with some of the languages they now have available, Lao is almost no where to be found. I know and have met many people from Laos or Issan so it isn’t an extremely rare language… I’d like to be able to speak properly with out using slang so much, as well. If you’ve come across anything I’d be greatful if you would let me know. Thank you!

  5. Hi Jeff, I do know of the thai-language.com dictionary, I have it. Since this list was created, over 100 new apps have hit the market. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue to add the new ones in the list or just at the bottom.

My favourite iOS dictionary app is Talking Thai-English-Thai. It doesn’t have sentences yet but they are considering it. They will also add the ability to save words to a list for further study. Chris P wrote a post for my site outlining a few of the coming adds to the dictionary.

  6. I am putting together my own collection of resources for Thai learners and I am finding your site and your reviews in particular to be great. Thanks. As for the dictionaries, did you know the thai-language.com site now has a free app available. I have been using the Talking Thai app for a while so I haven’t used the new one much yet, but that is my go-to dictionary when I am online with my computer and it seems to be quite similar. On the negative side, the thai-language app has no sound files but on the positive it has sample sentences (which Talking Thai doesn’t have). The biggest negative to both, IMHO, is the inability to save the words you have searched for to review later or to export to spreadsheet or flashcard programs.

  7. Thanks Tom. I’m going to start with Thai dictionaries. I doubt there will be any surprises in the dictionary section. Most suck in from the same online databases and/or are for the Thai market (English audio only). Only a few have put together their own selection of Thai words, complete with recorded sound files in Thai.

For paid apps, in top place is Chris and Benjawans’ fabulous Talking Thai–English–Thai Dictionary. Unless out I’m of touch, in second place should be Theo’s ClickThai Dictionary (he has wonderful plans to update his app, so stay tuned!)

I’ll also grade the top free Thai dictionary apps (smaller apps are often quicker to load).

  8. Wow, what a list. I agree, would appreciate to see something like top 10 or favorites for these apps. Would save a lot of time and $. Thanks.

  9. Hehh… yeah, it’s HUMONGOUS! I’m now looking for an online survey plugin for WP. Only one that I found has the ability to comment.

I soooo agree. The apps usually aren’t that expensive but the time it takes to learn your way around matters. I know I’m going to spend a gazillion hours checking out the apps on that list.

What I might do is review the decent apps, then shove the less admirable apps to the bottom of the review (links and details, no review).

  10. Oh my, that’s a HUGE list! I agree that it would be useful for people to comment on which ones they have tried and liked, or tried and found lacking. One of the big problems with the App Store is that with more than half a billion apps of varying quality, it’s difficult to know which are worth investing in. And it’s usually time that you are investing, rather than the couple of bucks it costs to buy the app …

Thanks for this exhaustive list 🙂

  11. Ryan, I’ve been told that from other iOS app producers. It takes a lot of time and money to create a quality app, but unless you can get your product in front of everyone the returns are slim.

I’ve played around with most of the Thai apps available (not so much the flashcard makers and translators) and in my opinion there are only a handful in each batch worth downloading (free or not). As there are so many to choose from, this time I’m going to stick my neck out and say which ones are my favs. I’ll also be asking opinions from other people so it won’t all be my tongue wag.

    Reply
  12. Thanks Michel 🙂 Giving users the ability to grade the apps would be fantastic (if I could do it properly). I have the apps in a spreadsheet but that’d be too clunky. If I can manage to put it online, how do I stop people from cheating? As for the full reviews, I still have to do those. I’m going to change it from the format of my original iOS reviews a bit but not much.

  13. What a long list indeed. Great for Thai students, but with so much competition it’s nearly impossible to make a worthwhile income from developing apps these days. 🙁

    Reply
  14. Wow! A lot of work there! Good job Cat! Now should allow your used to add comment or a mark, app by app. Will save you the time to review yourself.
