The subjunctive is a tense used to describe something non-factual, potentially not possible, doubtful, or fantastic. The subjunctive is used frequently for wishes, hypotheticals, requests, and even suggestions.
The subjunctive actually exists in two forms (namely Subjunctive I and Subjunctive II), but as the former is principally non-existent in everyday communication (rather for news media and official texts), we will not discuss it here.

Examples of Subjunctive II
Theories, Assumptions, or Guesses
- Wenn du sie nach einem Date fragen würdest, würde sie bestimmt ja sagen. (If you asked her on a date, she would certainly say yes!)
Wishes
- Ich wünschte, ich hätte 1 Million Dollar. (I wish I had a million dollars.)
“If” Statements
- Wenn ich ein Boot hätte, würde ich über das Meer segeln. (If I had a boat, I would sail across the sea.)
Requests
- Würdest du mir helfen, den Tisch aufzubauen, den ich bei IKEA gekauft habe? (Would you help me build the table I bought from IKEA?)
Regrets
- Hätte ich ihr nur gesagt, dass ich sie liebe, bevor der andere Typ sie zum Abschlussball eingeladen hat. (If only I had told her I loved her before the other guy asked her to prom.)
A Different Past
- Hätte Christoph Kolumbus Amerika nicht entdeckt, hätten vielleicht die Azteken Europa entdeckt. (If Christopher Colombus hadn’t discovered America, maybe the Aztecs would’ve discovered Europe.)
Suggestions
- Vielleicht könntest du deine Mutter fragen, ob sie einverstanden ist, dass wir die Garage als Proberaum für unsere Band nutzen. (Maybe you could ask your mom if she’d be ok with us using the garage for our band practice room.)
Conjugating Subjunctive II
würden + infinitive
Ich würde dort nur arbeiten, wenn sie mir 40 Euro pro Stunde zahlen würden. (I would only work there if they paid me 40 Euros per hour.)
- In this situation, ”würden” is conjugated according to the subject “ich”, and the verb following is in the infinitive
hätten + past participle
Ich hätte mehr Geld gespart, wenn ich gewusst hätte, dass es eine Finanzkrise geben würde. (I would have saved more money if I had known that there would be a financial crisis.)
- Here there are two instances of “hätten” being conjugated according to the subject “ich”, and one instance of a “würden + infinitive” at the end
wären + past participle
Ich wäre zur Party gegangen, wenn ich gewusst hätte, dass mein Schwarm da ist. (I would have gone to the party if I had known that my crush is there.)
- In this example, the wären is used in the same way in subjunctive II as a sein verb. Thus, gehen necessitates wären in subjunctive II. The wären is conjugated according to the subject “ich”, and the gehen is put in the past participle. The second instance of subjunctive II in the sentence uses the hätten + “past participle” pattern
